Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ponderant-, ponderans.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ponderant-, ponderans (1655 in the passage translated in quot. 16561), use as noun of classical Latin ponderant- , ponderāns , present participle of ponderāre ponder v. Compare Anglo-Norman ponderaunt ponderous, heavy (late 14th cent. or earlier), Middle French ponderant weighty, important (beginning of the 15th cent.), French †pondérant (of style) ponderous, solemn (1769). Compare slightly earlier equiponderant adj., and later counter-ponderant adj.
Obsolete.
A body that has weight or mass; spec. one that is being weighed.
