Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian ponente.
Etymology: < Italian ponente (see ponent n.). In quot. 1576 translating Spanish †ponent; in quot. 1782 probably rendering Catalan ponent; compare also Middle French, French ponant and its etymon Old Occitan ponen (see ponent n.).
In the western Mediterranean: a westerly wind; the west wind.
