Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin pōns ; pons cerebri n.
Etymology: Ultimately < classical Latin pōns bridge < the same Indo-European base as (with a different ablaut grade) Sanskrit panthā , path(i)- path and ancient Greek πάτος path. Originally (in quot. 1671 at sense 1) shortened < pons cerebri n.Until the 20th cent. much less common than pons Varolii n.
Anatomy.
1. The part of the brainstem between the mesencephalon and the medulla oblongata, having an arched ventral surface with prominent transverse fibres, resembling a bridge between the two cerebellar hemispheres. Also called pons Varolii, pons cerebelli, pons cerebri.
