Etymology: < Italian ponticello bridge of a stringed instrument (1612), little bridge (1313) < post-classical Latin ponticellus little bridge (from 12th cent. in Italian sources), alteration (after classical Latin -ellus -ellus suffix) of classical Latin ponticulus little bridge ( < ponti- , alternative stem of pōns bridge (see pons n.) + -culus -culus suffix).With sense A. 2 and with use as adverb and adjective compare sul ponticello n., sul ponticello adv., sul ponticello adj.
