Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poudre.
Etymology: < Canadian French poudre (1791 or earlier; compare quot. 1791 in etymological note), specific use of French poudre powder n.1 Compare Canadian French poudrer (of snow) to be whirled up or about, e.g. in a snowstorm (1743), spec. use of French poudrer powder v.1Compare the following earlier uses of the French word in an English context, with reference to French-speaking Canada:1791 E. P. Simcoe Diary 31 Dec. (1911) 71 There is little wind here, except with a snowstorm of fine snow. The [Canadian] French call it poudre or powdered snow, and to travel with that blowing in one's face is very disagreeable.1838 J. H. Ingraham Burton I. xi. 156 As the night gathered around them, the wind..increased in violence, drifting the fine particles of snow (by the habitans [of Québec] termed la poudre) into their faces.
