Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Pouilly.
Etymology: < French Pouilly (1818 or earlier) < the place-name element Pouilly in the names of several villages in central France where such wines are produced, e.g. Pouilly-sur-Loire in the Loire valley and Pouilly in Burgundy. Compare later Pouilly Fumé n., Pouilly-Fuissé n.
Any of various dry white wines produced in central France. Cf. Pouilly Fumé n., Pouilly-Fuissé n.
