Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin prasocorid-, prasocoris.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prasocorid-, prasocoris (5th cent. in Palladius) < ancient Greek πρασοκουριδ- , πρασοκουρίς < πράσον leek (see prasine n. and adj.) + κείρειν to cut, shear (see corm n.2).Theophrastus reports that the πρασοκουρίς ate lettuces and leeks, Aristotle that it had wings. On the basis of these testimonies the insect has been variously identified with the mole-cricket, Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa, and with the caterpillar of the leek moth, Acrolepiosis assectella.
Obsolete. rare.
