单词 predy
释义

predyadj.

Brit. /ˈpriːdi/, U.S. /ˈpridi/
Forms: 1600s pridie, 1600s–1700s 1900s– predy.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare predy v.It has been suggested that predy developed out of the command ‘Make the ship ready ’ (compare quot. 1685). This is not impossible, but it assumes that the vowel sounds in ready adj. and predy were the same, which is difficult to reconcile with the recorded spellings. It is uncertain whether the verbal form pritly in the following isolated example is related:a1634 P. Pett Autobiogr. (1918) 108 The next days, being Friday and Saturday, we lay still to prytly the ship and take in such provisions as were wanting.
Nautical. Now rare (archaic and historical in later use).
Esp. of a ship: prepared for action or battle; ready.
