Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin prenomination-, prenominatio prior nomination (c1160 in a British source; 13th cent. in a continental source) < classical Latin praenōmināt- , past participial stem of praenōmināre prenominate v. + -iō -ion suffix1, or < pre- prefix + nomination n. Compare earlier prenominate adj. and prenominated adj., and later prenominate v.
