Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prīmitiae.
Etymology: < classical Latin prīmitiae, prīmiciae (plural) first-fruits, first offering, beginnings, probably < prīmitus at first, originally ( < prīmus prime adj. + -tus , suffix forming adverbs), or perhaps < prī before (see prior adj.) + the base of metere to reap (see messor n.) + -iae , plural of -ia -ia suffix1 (compare praemetium offering of first-fruits: see praemetial adj.), the idea of beginning having developed subsequently. Compare earlier primices n.In form primitias after classical Latin prīmitiās, accusative of prīmitiae.
