Etymology: < (i) French prévalence the quality of something which prevails, superiority, excellence (1504 in Middle French), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin praevalēntia superior force (2nd cent. a.d. in a legal text, though it has been suggested that this passage represents an interpolation), in post-classical Latin also predominance (13th cent. in British sources) < praevalent- , praevalēns , present participle of praevalēre prevail v. + -ia -ia suffix1; compare -ence suffix. Compare Italian prevalenza (1342 as prevalentia ). Compare earlier prevail n., prevailance n., prevailing n., and prevailment n. Compare also earlier prevalent adj.
