Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: prince n., bishop n.
Etymology: < prince n. + bishop n., probably after German Fürstbischof (18th cent. or earlier; compare fürstbischöflich of or relating to a prince-bishop (1655 or earlier as †fürst-bischofflich)).The following shows (rare) earlier use in the meaning ‘pre-eminent bishop’:1630 A. Cade Iustification Church of Eng. ii. iii. 253 Others hold the pope to be onely the Prince Bishop in order and honour before other, which are equall in commission with him.
Now chiefly historical.
A person holding the ranks of both bishop and prince; (esp. in Germany) a person holding the temporal possessions and authority of a bishopric with princely or noble rank (cf. prince n. 6, 8c). Occasionally also as a title or form of address.
