Etymology: < prevent v. or its etymon classical Latin praevent-, past participial stem of praevenīre prevene v. + -ive suffix. Compare Spanish preventivo (1422–5 in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from 1731), Italian preventivo (1601). Compare earlier preventing adj. 2 and later preventative n.
