Etymology: < Dutch pro Deo (in legal contexts) free of charge (18th cent.) < classical Latin prō Deō for God < prō pro prep. + Deō , ablative of Deus God (see deus int.).Compare the following earlier use of the Latin phrase in an English context with reference to the waiving of a medical fee:1752 C. Perry Seasonable Thoughts & Advices upon Inoculation 37 I absolutely disclaimed any Recompence, but promised to do her all the Service in my Power—Pro Deo—I accordingly undertook her..and at length recover'd her.

With reference to the legal representation of a person accused of a capital offence and unable to afford counsel: with no charge, legal costs being paid by the state at the instruction of the court. Also more generally: free of charge, for the public good; without the usual fee. Cf. pro bono adv.
