Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: pro- prefix2, simian adj.
Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + simian adj., after scientific Latin Prosimii, suborder name ( J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 72), itself after either scientific Latin Prosimia , former genus name ( M. J. Brisson Regnum animale (1756) 220) or scientific Latin Prosimiae , former group name ( G. C. C. Storr Prodromus methodi mammalium (1780) 33). Compare slightly earlier prosimious adj.

Relating to or designating mammals of the suborder Prosimii, a group of primitive, mostly arboreal primates that includes the lemurs, lorises, bushbabies, and tarsiers.In recent schemes the suborder Prosimii is often replaced by the suborder Strepsirhini, which usually excludes the tarsiers.
