promitv.

Forms:

α. late Middle English promette; Scottish pre-1700 promect, pre-1700 promeit.

β. late Middle English promut, late Middle English promytt (past tense), late Middle English promytt, late Middle English–1500s promit, late Middle English–1500s promitte, late Middle English–1500s promyt, late Middle English–1500s promytte, 1500s promitt; Scottish pre-1700 promict, pre-1700 promitt, pre-1700 promitt (past participle), pre-1700 promitte, pre-1700 promyct, pre-1700 promyct (past tense), pre-1700 promyt, pre-1700 promytte, pre-1700 1700s promit; N.E.D. (1908) also records forms late Middle English promit (past tense), late Middle English promitt.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French promitter; Latin prōmittere.
Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman promitter, Anglo-Norman and Middle French promettre (French promettre ) to promise (second half of the 10th cent. in Old French; < pro- pro- prefix1 + mettre to put, place (see mise n.1), after classical Latin prōmittere ), and partly < classical Latin prōmittere to let go or send forth, to put forth, to promise, guarantee, to predict < prō- pro- prefix1 + mittere to let go, send (see mission n.). Compare Old Occitan prometre (a1149), Catalan prometre (12th cent.), Spanish prometer (second half of the 10th cent.), Portuguese prometer (13th cent.), Italian promettere (1211). In sense 2 perhaps a variant of (or transmission error for) permit v. N.E.D (1908) notes that an alleged sense ‘to disclose, publish; to confess’ recorded in some 19th-cent. dictionaries (see e.g. Cent. Dict and Funk's Standard Dict.) is founded on a misquotation (as crimes promitted) by Cassell's Encycl. Dict. of the following:1548 Hall's Vnion: Henry VII f. xxxiiiv Pardone, of all offences, and crymes committed, and promocions, and rewardes, for obeynge to the kynges request.
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
1. transitive and intransitive. To promise.
