Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: pro- prefix2, Greek ποδ-, πούς, English -us.
Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + ancient Greek ποδ-, πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + -us, after Latin masculine nouns ending in -us . Compare later propus n.
Zoology.
The propodite of a crustacean limb, esp. in a claw-bearing limb, where it forms the base of the claw and the fixed side of the pincer against which the mobile part (dactylus) closes. Also: the terminal segment of each limb of a pycnogonid (sea spider).
