Etymology: < German Prontosil, proprietary name (1935 or earlier), of unknown origin.
Pharmacology. Now historical.
A reddish-brown azo dye which is a sulphonamide antibiotic, and was formerly used in the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections.Chemical name: 4-[(2,4-diaminophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonamide; C12H13N5O2S.Prontosil was the first sulphonamide antibiotic, originally developed by G. J. P. Domagk in 1934.
