Etymology: Partly < Middle French profection (French profection ) system of prediction based on the zodiac, progression (a1461 as perfection ), progression (of a star) (1510) < classical Latin prōfect- , past participial stem of prōficere to make headway, to advance, progress (see proficient adj.) + French -ion -ion suffix1 (compare post-classical Latin profectio advancement (from 9th cent. in British and continental sources)), and partly < Middle French profection act of setting out (of an army) (16th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation) and its etymon classical Latin profectiōn-, profectiō action of setting out, departure < profect- , past participial stem of proficīscī to set out, start ( < pro- pro- prefix1 + facere to make, do (see fact n.) + -īscī : see -ish suffix2) + -iō -ion suffix1.
