Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French proficiat.
Etymology: < French †proficiat payment given to bishops as a welcoming gesture upon their installation (c1450 in Middle French), expression of welcome (1521) < classical Latin prōficiat ‘may it profit’, 3rd person present subjunctive of prōficere to be advantageous, to profit (see proficient n. and adj.).
Obsolete.
An expression of welcome; spec. a payment given as a welcoming gesture or token of goodwill upon a person's entry into a new position.
