Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare earlier proo int.In spite of the assertion in quot. 1950 and the context of quots. 18791, 18792 a French or Occitan etymon has not been traced.
Now rare.
A command to a donkey or mule to move faster. Cf. proo int.In quot. 18792 also as intransitive verb: to cry ‘proot!’.
