Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin prōgenerāt- , prōgenerāre , -ive suffix; progenerate v., -ive suffix.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin prōgenerāt-, past participial stem of prōgenerāre progenerate v. + -ive suffix. In later use directly < progenerate v. + -ive suffix. Compare earlier generative adj., regenerative adj.
rare before 20th cent.
Procreative, reproductive.
