Origin: Formed within English, by blending. Etymons: progestin n., English luteosterone.
Etymology: Blend of progestin n. and luteosterone (see quot. 1935 at main sense; compare -sterone comb. form). Compare German Progesteron (W. M. Allen et al. 1935, in Klin. Wochenschr. 17 Aug. 1182/1).Apparently coined simultaneously in English and German.
Physiology and Medicine.
A steroid hormone produced by the corpus luteum and the placenta (or made synthetically) which is responsible for the secretory changes in the uterine lining in preparation for implantation of a fertilized ovum and is also necessary for the maintenance of pregnancy. Progesterone is used pharmacologically in the treatment of menstrual disorders and repeated miscarriage, and in contraceptives. Chemical name: 4-pregnene-3,20-dione; C21H30O2.
