Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin prōlātus , prōferre , -ed suffix1; prolate v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < classical Latin prōlātus, past participle of prōferre to bring forth, to produce, to prolong, extend (see prolate v.) + -ed suffix1, and partly (in sense 4) directly < prolate v. + -ed suffix1.In sense 4 rendering Sanskrit pluta (Pali puluta ) prolated, literally ‘afloat, having drifted’, perhaps ‘having drifted towards (a following syllable)’, use as adjective of past participle of plu- (see note at prolate v.).
