1897 Lancet 18 Dec. 1628/1 The chemical factory of Bayer and Co. in Elberfeld has recently produced a new compound consisting of silver and protein in which the metal is not in the form of a salt but is in organic union with the protein molecule. This compound was discovered by Dr. Eichengrün..and is termed ‘protargol’.

1907 J. H. Parsons Dis. Eye xxix. 580 In more severe cases..protargol, 15 to 20 per cent., should be rubbed into the margins of the lids with a stumpy camel's hair brush.

1938 Stain Technol. 13 154 Protargol exhibits an isoelectric point roughly about pH 4, at which acidity it is precipitated, hence it might be expected to behave somewhat like a dye.

1976 Acta Zool. 57 117 The figures demonstrate the close connection between the surface cilia as shown by SEM [= scanning electron microscopy] and the subsurface kinetosomes revealed by the protargol impregnations.
