释义 | Protozoan. Biology. With singular agreement: a group of phyla of the kingdom Protista (formerly also treated as a single phylum of the animal kingdom), comprising chiefly unicellular and microscopic eukaryotic animals, including amoebas, foraminiferans, radiolarians, flagellates, ciliates, sporozoans, etc. With plural agreement: (also in form protozoa) such animals collectively; protozoans. Cf. Protophyta n.Goldfuss's group also included sponges, coelenterates, rotifers, and bryozoans. Von Siebold, in his Lehrb. der vergleichenden Anatomie der wirbillosen Thiere (1845), restricted it to the unicellular animals, which are now generally considered to be merely a loose collection of phyla, rather than forming a discrete taxon.protozoon n. is used as the singular form.
