Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French pussant, puissant.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pussant, puessant, puisant, pusant, pussaunt, puissaunt, etc. and Anglo-Norman and Middle French puissant, poissant powerful (c1100 in Old French; also as noun; French puissant ), use as adjective of present participle of pooir to be able (see power n.1); compare -ant suffix1. Compare Old Occitan poisan, poissan (a1195; Occitan poissant), Catalan puixant (1397), Spanish pujante (1396 as puxant), all ultimately < French. The Old French, Middle French form poissant is the phonologically expected form of the present participle (although in fact poant is more usually found); in the form puissant the French word is apparently influenced by puiss- , alternative stem of pooir (compare French puisse , subjunctive singular). The pronunciation of this word apparently usually paralleled that of puissance n. (see the discussion at that entry). With use as noun compare French puissant (end of 12th cent. in Old French with reference to God, 13th cent. with reference to people).
