Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori puka.
Etymology: < Maori puka. It is not clear why two unrelated trees were given the same name by the Maori, although both could be said to have large, glossy leaves.With sense 2 compare note at pukatea n.
New Zealand.
1. A small, evergreen New Zealand tree, Meryta sinclairii (family Araliaceae), which has very large glossy leaves and terminal panicles of inconspicuous greenish-white flowers, and is native to certain offshore islands but widely grown on the mainland.

2. An evergreen, initially epiphytic, New Zealand shrub or small tree, Griselinia lucida (family Griseliniaceae), which has leathery ovate leaves and panicles of tiny greenish flowers followed by purple or black berries. Also called shining broadleaf.
