Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ac- prefix, complice n.
Etymology: Probably < ac- prefix + complice n., probably by association with accomplish v. (compare especially the form accomplish at Forms). Compare similarly Anglo-Norman accomplice, acomplice (a1411 or earlier). N.E.D. (1884) gives only the pronunciation as (ăkǫ·mplis) /əˈkɒmplɪs/. The British pronunciation with /ʌ/ in the second syllable is recorded as an alternative in D. Jones Eng. Pronouncing Dict. (ed. 11, 1956).
