Etymology: < classical Latin psittacus < Hellenistic Greek ψιττακός parrot (already in ancient Greek as ψιττακή, feminine), of unknown origin, probably a loanword.A derivation of the Greek word from an Eastern source, perhaps ultimately < Sanskrit śuka parrot, has been suggested, but it presents phonological problems and is not supported by evidence. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (psi·tæk) /ˈpsɪtæk/.

Obsolete. rare.
