Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French prêle, asprele.
Etymology: < French prêle horsetail (1549 in Middle French as prele ; earlier as prelé (1539); also as presle (1611 in Cotgrave)), variant (probably showing metanalysis of the definite article) of asprele (12th cent. in Old French), a diminutive formation (compare -elle suffix) ultimately < classical Latin asper asper adj.With Old French asprele compare Italian asperella (1598).
Obsolete.
A horsetail; esp. the rough horsetail, Equisetum hyemale.
