Etymology: < puff v. + -ery suffix. Compare Dutch †pofferij boasting, bragging (1574 in Kiliaan).
1. The action or practice of ‘puffing’ someone or something; extravagant or undeserved praise, esp. for advertising or promotional purposes; writing, etc., intended to have this effect.In U.S. Law now used spec. to refer to an exaggerated opinion (in contrast to a factual assertion) expressed for the purpose of advertising, regarded as legally permissible.In quot. 1731 perhaps simply: grandiloquent or bombastic language.
