Etymology: < pulmo- comb. form + -grade comb. form, after French pulmogrades, plural noun (1839 or earlier) or its etymon scientific Latin Pulmograda, former group name ( H. M. D. de Blainville Man. d'actinologie (1834) I. 271), so called in allusion to the motion of a swimming jellyfish, which resembles that of a lung, creating a flow of oxygenated water over the body surface.
