Etymology: < post-classical Latin purpart-, purpars (1430, 1583 in British sources), variant (either substitution of French pur- for Latin pro- (see pur- prefix), or originating in confusion of the manuscript abbreviations for pur- and pro- ) of propars (frequently 1218–1542 in British sources) portion or share, especially of an inheritance < classical Latin pro- pro- prefix1 + pars part n.1 Compare earlier purparty n. and the French and Latin words cited at that entry.
