Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pourpartie.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pourpartie, purpartie, purpartye and Old French (Normandy) porpartie share, portion, part of an estate allotted to a coparcener (1255 in Old French in legal use; frequently in Anglo-Norman) < por- , pour- , pur- pur- prefix + partie , partye division, part (see party n.). Compare post-classical Latin propartia (1423, a1564 in British sources), purpartia (from 1310 in British sources). Compare later purpart n.
