Etymology: < pupa n. + -ate suffix3. Compare German verpuppen (late 18th cent. in entomological, early 19th cent. in figurative use; chiefly used reflexively). Compare slightly earlier pupation n. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (piū·peit) /ˈpjuːpeɪt/.
Entomology.
intransitive. To change into a pupa or chrysalis. Also figurative: to transform, to change, to metamorphose.
