单词 purulent
释义

purulentadj.

Brit. /ˈpjʊər(j)ᵿlənt/, /ˈpjʊər(j)ᵿln̩t/, U.S. /ˈpjʊr(j)ələnt/
Forms: late Middle English purulente, 1500s– purulent.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French purulent; Latin pūrulentus.
Etymology: < Middle French, French purulent discharging pus, suppurating (1542), (of urine, saliva, blood) consisting of or containing pus (1555) and its etymon classical Latin pūrulentus containing or consisting of pus < pūr- , pūs pus n. + -ulentus -ulent suffix. Compare Spanish purulento (second half of the 15th cent.), Italian purulento , †purulente (a1476 in plural purulenti ). The figurative use in sense 3 is apparently not paralleled in French until considerably later (early 20th cent. or earlier).
1. Of the nature of or resembling pus; consisting of or containing pus.
