Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French porveu, pourveu.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman porveu, purveu, purveue, purview and Middle French pourveu, pourvu provided (second half of the 13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman in the phrase purveu est ke ‘it is provided that’, mid 14th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman as conjunction, both frequently in legal use; French pourvu ), specific uses of past participle of porveeir , purveeir , etc. purvey v. The use as noun is apparently not paralleled in French. In later use, especially in senses 2 and 3, influenced by association with view n. Compare proviso conj., proviso n.1, and later purvision n., purvey n.
