Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek πύον , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πύον pus (see pyo- comb. form) + -in suffix1, after French pyine (L. Güterbock 1838, in L'Expérience Apr. 142/2).
Biochemistry. Now rare.
A proteinaceous substance found in pus.

1925 H. G. Wells Chem. Pathol. (ed. 5) xviii. 474 Mice injected..with the nucleoprotein of pus, the so-called pyin, or with chondroitin-sulfuric acid, did not develop amyloidosis.
