Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: Greek πυρήν , -o- connective, -carp comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πυρήν fruit-stone (see pyrene n.1) + -o- connective + -carp comb. form. In sense 2 after German Pyrenocarpien, plural (1884 in the passage translated in quot. 1887 at sense 2). With sense 2 compare earlier pyrenocarpous adj.
1. Botany. A fruit containing a pyrene or pyrenes; a drupe. Obsolete. rare.
