Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French quatrieme.
Etymology: < Middle French quatrieme tax or duty levied especially on wine or cider, originally a quarter of the sales price (1379; French quatrième ; now regional (Normandy)), use as noun of quatrieme , quatriesme fourth (c1300 in Old French as quatroysme ) < quatre (see quatre n.) + -ième (see quatorzeim n.).With the form katerenme perhaps compare α. forms at quatrin n.
Obsolete.
A twenty-five percent duty or tax levied on certain commodities, such as wine.
