Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: pyro- comb. form, Greek γνώμη , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek γνώμη means of knowing, mark, token (see gnome n.1) + -ic suffix, after German pyrognomisch ( T. Scheerer 1840, in Ann. d. Physik u. Chemie 51 495).
Mineralogy and Geology.
Of a mineral: becoming incandescent when heated, esp. to relatively low temperatures; of or relating to such behaviour.

1845 Edinb. New Philos. Jrnl. 39 193 The substance..on being heated, becomes converted into ordinary zircon,..after exhibiting, to a certain extent, the pyrognomic property presented in a greater degree by gadolinite and polykrase.
1875 T. S. Hunt Chem. & Geol. Ess. 5 Scheerer..points to the existence in granite of what he has called pyrognomic minerals, such as allanite and gadolinite.
1882 Ogilvie's Imperial Dict. (new ed.) Pyrognomic, applied to certain minerals which, when heated to a certain degree, exhibit a glow of incandescence, probably arising from a new disposition of their molecules.
1954 W. Eitel Physical Chem. Silicates b. i. 575 This experiment..is similar to the phenomenon known as the pyrognomic behavior of some evidently glasslike minerals.
2003 D. A. Young Mind over Magma vi. 88 How is it, Scheerer asked, that such minerals in their pyrognomic state should be in rocks allegedly fomed by igneous fusion?
