Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pyrrhuloxia.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pyrrhuloxia, genus name ( C. L. Bonaparte Conspectus generum avium (1850) I. 500), blend of the genus names Pyrrhula (bullfinches: see pyrrhuline adj.) and Loxia (crossbills: see loxia n.¹).

A large North American grosbeak, Cardinalis sinuatus (or Pyrrhuloxia sinuata), that is related to the cardinals, having a thick curved bill, a prominent crest, and predominantly grey plumage with (in the male) areas of red. Formerly called Texas cardinal.
