Etymology: < post-classical Latin pythonissa (Vulgate), phitonissa (12th cent. or earlier) woman with powers of divination < python- , pytho Python n.2 + classical Latin -issa -ess suffix1. Compare slightly earlier pythoness n.Compare Vulgate, 1 Chronicles 10:13 eo quod..insuper etiam pythonissam consuluerit (King James Bible (1611): ‘and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit’); Septuagint ἐν τῷ ἐγγαστριμύθῳ (see engastrimyth n.).
