Etymology: < Urdu qawwāl and its etymon Persian qawwāl < Arabic qawwāl reciter, chanter, singer, especially of religious verse < qāla to speak. Compare qawwali n.The form with -vv- probably reflects the Persian pronunciation of the Arabic word.

A performer of qawwali.In quot. 1911, referring to the Yezidi sect, whose religion contains elements of a number of other faiths, including Islam.
