Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element . Etymons: Latin quadrātus , quadrātum , -o- connective.
Etymology: < either classical Latin quadrātus quadrate adj. or classical Latin quadrātum quadrate n.1 + -o- connective. Compare post-classical Latin quadrato- (1686 in sense 1 in quadrato-cubus fifth power, quadrato-quadratum fourth power).Found in a small number of formations in three distinct fields, illustrated below.
1. Mathematics. Denoting a power or degree of two and prefixed to a term indicating another power or degree to form terms denoting a combined power of a number or degree of an equation, etc.
quadrato-cubic adj. Obsolete (of a number) equal to the fifth power of another number; (of an equation) of the fifth degree, quintic.
