Brit. /ˌkwɒdrᵻˈdʒɛmᵻnl/, U.S. /ˌkwɑdrəˈdʒɛmən(ə)l/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin quadrigeminus , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin quadrigeminus fourfold ( < quadri- quadri- comb. form + geminus twofold, double: see geminous adj.), in post-classical and scientific Latin also designating a muscle (1615 or earlier), designating the quadrigeminal bodies (corpora quadrigemina ), the quadrigeminal tubercles (tubercula quadrigemina ), and the quadrigeminal protuberances (eminentiae quadrigeminae ; all 1819; compare sense 2), and designating a pulse (1903 in the passage translated in quot. 1904 at sense 3) + -al suffix1. Compare French quadrijumeaux (1639 as quadrigemeaux (as noun) denoting the quadrigeminal muscles; 1814 in sense 2), Italian quadrigemino (1712 in sense 2).
