Etymology: < post-classical Latin quartilis (c1270 in a British source in aspectus quartilis quartile aspect) < classical Latin quartus fourth (see quart n.2) + -īlis -il suffix. Compare Middle French, French quartile (1557). Compare later quintile adj., sextile adj.

Astrology and Astronomy. Designating the aspect of two celestial objects which are a quarter of a circle (90 degrees) apart in the sky; of or relating to such an aspect.
