Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quadrivium.
Etymology: < classical Latin quadrivium place where four ways meet, in post-classical Latin also the four mathematical sciences (6th cent. in Boethius) < quadri- quadri- comb. form + via way (see via n.) + -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare Old French quadruve , cadruve the four mathematical sciences (c1210), Middle French quadrive crossroads (16th cent.), French quadrivium the four mathematical sciences (1797). Compare earlier quadrivial adj.

Cf. trivium n. 1. historical.Together with the more elementary trivium, these four subjects made up the seven liberal arts (or seven sciences). The four sciences of the quadrivium were linked by a concern with number or magnitude, arithmetic dealing with magnitudes as such, geometry with immovable magnitudes, astronomy with magnitudes in motion, and music with the relations of different magnitudes to one another.
