Etymology: < the genitive of queen n. + bench n. (compare bench n. 3b), after King's Bench n.
Chiefly with the. During the reign of a queen: a court of record and the supreme court of common law in the United Kingdom (now historical); (in later use) spec. one of the three divisions of the High Court of Justice in England and Wales (more fully Queen's Bench Division). Later also (as Court of Queen's Bench): the supreme court of each of a number of provinces in Canada. Cf. King's Bench n. 1.The later specific sense relating to England and Wales was established by the Judicature Act of 1873. Cf. chancery n. 2a, family division n. (b) at family n. and adj. Compounds 2.
